Lentinula edodes — Shiitake — has been cultivated in East Asia for over 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest continuously farmed edible and medicinal mushrooms in human history. In Chinese herbal practice it is known as Xiāng Gū (fragrant mushroom) and has been used as both food and medicine since at least the Song dynasty (960–1279 AD). In Japan it has been cultivated on oak logs for centuries and holds a deeply established place in both cuisine and herbal practice. It holds a scientific distinction no other mushroom in the world can claim: its compound lentinan was approved by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in 1985 as an adjunct pharmaceutical treatment — the first mushroom-derived compound to achieve drug status anywhere on earth.
