Phellinus linteus — known as sang-hwang (桑黃) across East Asia, meaning "mulberry yellow" for its colour and its traditional growth on mulberry trees — is one of the most revered functional mushrooms in Korean and Japanese herbal medicine, with a recorded history of use spanning over 2,000 years. It appears in traditional Korean and Japanese pharmacopoeias and was used across the Han dynasty period in Chinese herbal practice. In East Asia it is regarded as one of the most medicinally significant of all functional mushrooms — yet in Western supplement markets it remains almost entirely unknown, partly because it is genuinely difficult to cultivate and rarely grown in Europe.

It means the mushroom is extracted twice using two different solvents. First, hot water pulls out the water-soluble compounds — primarily beta-glucans and polysaccharides. Then, organic alcohol extracts the fat-soluble compounds — including riterpenoids — that hot water cannot reach.
The two extracts are combined to create a single full-spectrum tincture. It's more labour-intensive than single extraction, but it produces a significantly more complete product.
